My dog is 15 in October and 3 weeks ago she needed her anal glands emptied by the vet. (she is on a hypoallergenic diet and dry food upsets her stomach).
To cut a long story short she ended up with an infection and had to have her anal glands emptied three times in just six days!
she had antibiotics and steroids which came to an end three days ago and unfortunately we are back to her licking her bum again and we are going vets again tonight.
the vet said last time if it happens again they would have to remove her anal glands but she is nearly 15 ( a jack russell so these do live longer than other dogs though).
i have read on line its not a nice operation and can cause incontinence afterwards and ongoing pain?
If your dog has had this operation can you tell me the after effects…. Basically we cant add fibre due to her cholitus and IBD …..AND we are not sure wether we want to cause her any more pain in her life.
this is breaking my heart

Not personal experience but an acquaintance’s GSD had that op.
she did say the post op management was difficult but each case will be different.Have you discussed all the consequences with your vet? They are the best people to advise you as they know your dog.1
