P45 Question

I'm on Universal Credit and I'm about to start a new part-time job. And I will continue to receive UC.
I'm just wondering , should i get a p45 from the DWP to give to my employer. Or should I use the p45 from my most recent job (which was in December). I really don't want to go onto an emergency tax code if I can avoid it.
Thank you for any help.

There's no point in using a P45 from December, as that would relate to the previous tax year. And if you are continuing to claim UC then you wouldn't get a P45 from DWP either. UC isn't classed as taxable income so if you fill in the new starter form for your new employer to say you've had no taxable income this tax year so far then you should be sorted.

It is important to realise that the emergency tax code is 1257L , probably similar or even the same as your P45 tax code. You are too late to use the tax code on your old P45 as this option ends for new employees who start after 24th May. If you use your P45 you will be put onto the emergency tax code applied on a week 1 month 1 basis but if you forget the P45 and ask for a starter checklist and select option A you will be put onto the 1257L emergency tax code applied back dated to the start of the tax year. If your part time earnings are to be less than about £242 a week or £1048 a month then you will not pay tax on the emergency tax code whether it is applied week1/month 1 basis or backdated.0
