I think the solution is to buy any TV that is the right size and then use with a DORO universal remote control.

The frustrating thing I've found with these simple controls is that the miss out the option that many elderly people need, which is to turn subtitles on and off.... If anyone knows of anything similar to the above but with this added button, I'd love to hear of it...

Does it matter if it’s not as basic as the one he’s got now? As long as he can still set it up via the arial, change channels and turn the volume up and down, he can ignore everything else on the remote.
Of course, it "matters", hence the thread
I am old, 60+ and for years every time we need to change our washing machine, tv, car
mobile phone etc etc - it is really hard to get a grip with the new controls

OP -  go to ebay and see if the same model or something close to this can be found.
That’s not age, that’s lack of ability.

As someone who is almost the same age as you, I am offended by your remarks.

I'm clearly talking about myself mate and from what I've seen.

Ebay is the best route, OP. IE, like for like if possiblep00hsticks said:

    It's swings and roudnabouts.
When we first upgraded to Sky Q after years of the HD remote - boy was it hard to get a handle of it.
On Sky Q - you just say into the remote - " subtitles" for on and for off - "subtitles off."
Another plus is finding stuff, you just speak into the remote.

For me I got the internet and a computer before hardly anyone else had one - but like everything for most people - when buttons and stuff is in different places, it gets a while getting used to it and some are like me, dread this and think, was it worth changing. We recently upgraded our tv and the remote is hernedos but thankfully one of our son's set it up and we only use the sky remote.

As I said previously, even getting a new washing machine, or drier every 5 years or about - its a nightmare initially and takes getting used to as with a mobile phone.

The best thing for the OP's friend is get a like-for-like or very close off eBay/etc.

Not sure if it matters but the op said the TV is currently being used by Freeview and an aerial

I think most TVs these days are smart TVs and I don't know if Internet is required to set them up even if Internet is never used after that

does the op's father have broadband ? Do some TVs require broadband?

I was mortified when I saw my hospital discharge report, which described me as an elderly man. I’m in my 70s, and elderly is ten years away. :)

It's like nuclear fusion power stations, always 10 years away.

I'm 78 going on 79 but like you, "elderly" seems a long time away. I meet regularly with some of my old workmates, most are in their 80's and one of whom is in his nineties but you wouldn't call any of them elderly.

Some of them are creaking a bit mechanically, but we are all capable of learning new things and we all have quite complex hobbies.

Dont forget that we are the generation that invented most of the stuff that people are using nowadays, (including mobile phones and computers etc) rather than just improving it.

This is so true. I have friends (early 60s) who have written themselves off and everything is a massive chore to them.

There was me thinking I was still in my prime only to find out I am now considered 'elderly' - now I know how all those people felt when, as a much younger me, I referred to them as 'elderly' :(
