Keeping hedge healthy

Morning all! I inherited a Thorny Olive hedge (Elaegnus Pungens) with the house which I love as it’s evergreen and sturdy. However the last couple of years it’s been getting very bushy, but seems unhappy when cut back. I’d like to get it back into shape but think I’ve been cutting it at the wrong time (September). Would anyone know if I can cut it back in June without any impact (there’s no nesting birds)? And could it use a good feed - any recommendations? Other than a cut I’ve left it alone so far.

It also has Ash growing through it - it first appeared a couple of years ago but has self seeded itself everywhere! Any ideas on how to limit it as I’d rather it didn’t take over the hedge! Thanks

Looks healthy to me. Trimming in September/October would be best, and those ash trees need to come out at ground level - taking as much root as you can.

Trace the Ash to ground level and then cut and treat with a stump killer. It’ll be impossible to remove the roots without making a real mess.

The hedge looks good to me.
Don't think it likes feeding without looking it up but given it's dense a little grow more wouldn't hurt.

I was thinking those were Elder trees. They seed a lot. Easier to get out initially.
Most Ash trees have been cut down due to Ash dieback.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

I'd tie a bin bag around the lowest part of the tree you don't want, then open up the bottom of the bag and spray the leaves with glyphosate.

Leave it for a few weeks and it will die off.
