You can both look for new houses, and keep waiting for the current one. You can inform the current chain that you are doing this, and possibly say that if you have another offer accepted, then you will withdraw from the current chain.

This doesn't need to be done as a 'threat', but simply as matter of fact.

As I think you're realising, it really comes down to how much you want this particular house. If you threaten to pull out, you may risk your vendors saying fine, we're going back on the market. So I'd only do this if you would be able to accept losing this house.

I would though still be keeping an eye on the market, and if anything equally as good/better comes on the market, nothing to stop you looking and sussing out the chain position on that one, although the risk is you won't really know until you're committed.

yeah, this is exactly it. We will keep an eye on other stuff out there and book in a few viewings, but I think ultimately we're more upset by the idea of walking away than we are about waiting for what we want.

Per the EA about an hour or so ago (so taken with a big old pinch of salt), C have a handful of viewings this weekend, and apparently they're much more willing to compromise on what they want, have expanded their budget, and are looking at a wider geographical area than they were originally, so we have everything crossed they'll get some offers in soon.

If it was a steal, someone else would offer more money than you and get if for "slightly less of a steal but still a steal."
You've been waiting for 9 months already.  I would give B an ultimatum and pull out if they don't get a move on.  If B are serious about their sale, they would move into a rental property.
Not necessarily, demand is way down in some areas now.

Do you not get bored of the constant doom and gloom and the need to shoehorn it in everywhere?
Nothing gloomy about house prices/rents under pressure, that is good for society, saying that demand is down and listings up is just a statement of fact though, very hard to argue the opposite?
