Incorrect Tax - Missing P45

Wondering if anyone can help. I left a company in November 2024 and have since gone self employed. I would like to file my tax return for 24/25 tax year to get a tax rebate however my previous company never issued me with a P45. I have contacted them multiple times requesting it but no response from them whatsoever.

When I left they also stated I owed some income tax which was odd and didn’t make any sense, I tried to discuss with them but they said they use an automated payroll system and it can’t be changed, also sent me a letter and said if I do not pay this tax due within 48hrs then it shall be past onto debt collectors. So I paid them this money (in hindsight now I shouldn’t have I don’t think), my thinking was I would just receive this back as Tax rebate in after April 2025. But to my surprise on my HMRC account they haven’t declared the tax I paid them and the tax I paid automatically from my pageslips is lower on my HMRC account also! I am not sure where to go from here having no luck with getting in contact with the company themselves?

I would like to submit my tax return asap but I don’t think I would be able to as the numbers I would input would be different to those that the company have submitted to HMRC.

Any advice is welcomed. Thank you.

So, are you saying your payslips differ from what has been paid the HMRC as in HMRC show less than what was deducted from you on your payslip.
Either way, you will have to ensure you have paid the correct amount of tax to HMRC on what you have been paid by your previous employer regardless of what is on your payslip.
Maybe enter all of your previous employed earning and your self employed earnings to get an idea of how much tax is due overall.

Hello, it might be worth talking to HMRC. If you can't do this yourself and you can't afford an adviser, maybe the tax charities could help? See: https://www.litrg.org.uk/tax-nic/getting-help-tax/help-tax-friends-family-professionals-or-other-organisations

I'd use the figures from your final payslip to work out whether YOU think you owed tax or not - it sounds quite dodgy what they did, and the fact that money you paid to them hasn't landed in your tax account when you thought that's where it was going ...

You can report that here: https://www.gov.uk/report-tax-fraud

I'd want to sort it before submitting tax return ...
