New car
hello🙂
I am going to start using my parents car due to our current car being returned. It’s being dropped off to my house today so I need to change the name on the logbook but won’t be able to tax it until 1st June. how do I go about this? Do I request the change on logbook then SORN the vehicle until the 1st? can you SORN it for a short period of time?

note - my parents car won’t be used until the 1st will be sitting on my drive way0

Is the car not currently taxed anyway?0

is it taxed yes. but if I request the change of details will it not automatically cancel the tax?0
-
yes, you notify the change of registered keeper and SORN it
You cannot change the status for 5 days
On 1 June you tax it
Edit: how does this relate to bankruptcy?0 -
Are you just borrowing the car for a while, or are you buying this instead of your car that has gone back. I dont believe you would need to change the log book if just borrowing it for a while.0

OP, do the logbook change and tax it on the 1st June. Your parents have already paid the tax until end of May. If it was a private sale you would do the change and SORN it, but it's not really the same. In future, might be worth posting in the motoring section.
As above, if it's a temporary loan, you don't need to change the logbook.1 -
Just out of interest - I bought a scooter 4 days ago, I just sat at the side of the road and insured it, then taxed it with new keeper slip. Why the need to SORN it and wait until June 1st? Is it just to gain 2 weeks extra of VED? I can understand doing that if the VED for the car is 400 and something quid. But for a scooter at £24/year it wouldn't seem worth it. And also if you SORN it, then you can't drive or keep it on the road?0

But as it's OP's parents car change registered keeper over on 1st June (if that's what is being done) and job done.

If it's a higher value car, then they could be saving around £50 for the month, if not, around £20. Given this was originally posted in the bankruptcy advice section, that might make a lot of difference to some people.0
