Do I really HAVE to have a smart meter?

I have received a letter from British Gas saying that if I do not have a smart meter installed within the next month, my old meter will no longer be able to pick up the next generation of radio signals, or something like that. And whatever that really means.

I had decided after taking expert advice (OK, my pub landlord, who used to sell smart meters himself) that I was better off sticking with the old school ones, for a list of reasons which included the ability to cut you off at the flick of a switch.

I am wondering whether this letter is scare tactics by BG to get everyone onto smart meters, or do I really need to switch?
