I get that message when I try to open any picture I've saved on my laptop. I've tried restarting the laptop a few times but still get the same message. Is there a simple solution - I'm not techie and the solutions I've seen via google when searching are beyond my capability- or do I have to take it for repair or get a new laptop?

It's a software issue, may need to get Windows reinstalled.0

If using Windows, have you recently installed updates?
If System Restore is enabled, use it to go back to a date when you know the issue was not present.0 -

Yes, recent updates installed but there's probably been a few updates since i last tried to open a picture. Looks like I have system restore, but if I go back a few months won't the same problem recur with the next Windows update?0 -
Search for apps and features or installed apps in Windows search bar and find the photos app. Try a repair first. Failing that uninstall the app and then go on the internet for windows store; search for ms photo app and install it again1

Thanks, the repair worked! Phew!0 -
Alternatively use alternative software. Faststone ImageViewer is a nice simple one to use and it is free.0
