HI my daughter recently bought a car from a VW dealership. She paid the deposit, signed all the relevant paperwork and following day sent the remaining cost of the car. She was then told she could collect the car after it had been inspected. The following day she received a phone call to say she could no longer have the car as the inspection had found major faults. However, 5 days later, she has still not received a refund, despite phone calls. What does she need to do to get them to give her the money back.

Ask nicely and wait up to 14 working days for it to be processed.0

Does she have a contract or any T&Cs? It will be in there.0

7 days later and the refund was processed. Way too long, it should have been immediate as mentioned above.0

Allowing two days for a weekend and three days for a BACS transfer to be proccessed. Seems like the matter was dealt with in a prompt fashion.0

A car dealer is in the business of selling cars, their process and tools are setup for that not making payments.
The OP doesnt state how their daughter paid, certainly with some methods of payment it will be at least 3 working days for them to receive cleared funds. Very few businesses are willing to repay a customer before they have actually received the customers money in the first place.
Whilst for consumers and even SMEs there is no cost difference between BACS and FasterPay for large businesses there is, FasterPay is over ten times the cost of BACS and so give then dealer is already going to be out of pocket they would most likely choose BACS which means another 3 working days for clearance to the OP. Add to that there will be a process with someone raising the request, a more senior person signing it off, someone in Finance raising the request and then a more senior person signing it off. It can add time, especially at the time of the year when people are on holidays.
7 days for cleared funds is not that unreasonable. The law requires them to make the payment within 14 days so they have completed it in under the allowed time.1
