Going back to BT From NTL help!

Ok, going back to BT, only on option one, using talk talk & 1899 etc

My question is, for people that have moved back from NTL to BT, can the BT line be plumed straight into the NTL telephone line?

As i have the NTL telephone boxes in alot of rooms and don't want to re-route the cables again!

Thanks for any advice

Did NTL put the sockets in the rooms or did you feed them off the main socket? If you fed them off the main socket, you could move the internal extension wiring from the main socket to the bottom half of your new BT Linebox. I assume you are not using extension wires via a plug-in adaptor otherwise you probably would not have asked.

If NTL put the sockets in, then it may not be so simple. If they work like Telewest, they may feed each socket from a junction box outside the house. In that case, they might disconnect the wires inside the junction box (in which case the extensions would not work) or they may leave all the extensions connected but also leave the connection to their exchange (in which case you wouldn't want to join it on to your BT line! When my father cancelled Telewest, they left the line live for quite a while after "disconnection" and closing his account).

I had BT and then ntl and then went back to BT, so I already had both sockets. The engineer just swapped the connection downstairs and the upstairs boxes remained the same.

I have. BT will contact NTL for you to arrange porting of the number. I would advise also calling NTL yourself to cancel, they require 30 days notice. I am currently in a battle with NTL as they have carried on charging line rental, despite BT contacting them, them releasing the number & de activating the line, they maintain it is still active. It seems NTL's technical side & billing side don't speak to each other.

    18866 & 1899 are great, you won't regret it.

Same here except we went from Telewest to BT. He placed a BT master socket next to the Telewest one but moved all the wiring that went into the Telewest master socket for our extensions to BT's own.

In fact for a short period during transfer of numbers, we could dial out from both BT and Telewest but yet both had the same number (we confirmed this with caller display). Only the BT line rung when we dialled our landline number.

    Cheers!

All the extensions are from the ntl box, the main one, i have routed under the wooden floor which i put down after installation, so this is going to be impossible to change :(

I live in a bungalow btw so it all drilling through walls etc (which have beeen replasterd etc)

** just had a brain wave**

I have run an extension into the attic from the main box, did this because i was thinking of having one of those house alarms that can dial out to warn you, i could use this to re-route the bt line, i have the tools myself, so should be quite easy.

The broadband, being a coax cable is another matter, will have to think on this one :)

    Thanks again!
  • deefadog,
your broadband solution might be to put it through a wireless router at the point of entry. Then just have a USB pick-up plugged into the slot in your PC. The computer could then be anywhere in the house without the need for trailing wires everywhere.
...and then the window licker said to me...

I contacted BT a few days ago about moving my Mother to BT from Telewest (you guessed it 18866 & 1899 were the motive). BT said their engineer (line inactive for 10 years so they send one out) will probably be able to connect the BT line up to the upstairs extension that Telewest installed.

I hope they do as I was going to pay a company to install one.:)

Hi I,m a telephone engineer and have worked on many of these such instances.Usual policy is to place one main socket next to the other companies and use it to connect to extensions, which should work without any change of wiring, youre just bypassing their master socket.Piece of 6 wire between the 2 will do it.A friendly engineer will do it for you as long as the 2 boxes are next to one another and its no great chew, and you make him a cup of tea. Some customers expect the earth, want everything connecting up as if its youre job to do it.They should beware. In this day and age phone companies are charging for whatever they can,if BT can bill you, they will and worry about it later. But as I say ,be friendly,no probs.BT and NTL sockets are compatable.Hope this helps.
