Spoonie_Turtle said:To be fair they do state multiple times that existing tax reporting rules have not changed, and then explicitly "Category B captures people who buy or make purposefully to sell; but not those who sell a few personal belongings every now and again, for example to declutter."
(I think it's quite helpful to have an explanation of why platforms are requesting this information, as long as people are clear about whether they themselves are trading or not.)
No need to wade through pages of stuff that don't apply to them.
And MSE James already provided a MSE link explaining things further up the thread.1 -

If I see one more thread on facebook or other forums where someone argues that their 'brothers friend's girlfriend's next door neighbour's mother' works for HMRC and has said that everything is taxable once you sell £1000 of goods or 30 things- and they must know and all us internet people telling them that only businesses pay tax are wrong, and obviously work for the tax man - I may bang my head on the desk.
The same old rubbish is going round and round, including
* give ebay or Vinted a fake NI number and they can't trace you
* I only buy pallets of stuff to resell and I'm not a business as I don't have staff
* How can I be a business , I'm only making candles for craft fairs - I don't have a factory
* my best friend has been phoned by HMRC to say that if she sells her wedding dress then she will need to pay them tax (yep, actually saw that one a few weeks ago)
I'm sure we can all add plenty to this.
The LITRG have some very useful advice, I have read their link and I wish those who needed to understand the rules would read it to - but they won't , not whilst people on the internet make wild and outlandish claims.
