Hi,
On PAYE, in a full time perm role, one usually gets payed once per month, and usally at the month end. However, suppose one starts work on the 15th of the month? Could one expect to be payed at the end of that month? How close to the end of the month is it, that if you started work then, then you would not expect to be payed at the end of that month?.....but instead your first pay packet would be payed at the end of the next month

Firstly it's paid not payed.
How much you'll get paid and when will depend on the payroll cut off - where I work it's the 20th - if you join after that, you get no money at the end of the first month, but a fatter pay cheque the following month which includes the days you worked after the cut off of the previous month.1 -
Where I used to work the cut-off date was the 16th I think, anything after that and you didn't get the money until the end of the next month.Mortgage free!
Debt free!
And now I am retired - all the time in the world!!1 -

Most places cut off 10-14 days before payday but can be earlier. Sometimes there are different cut offs for different aspects of the job. In my first ever job there was a different date for regular hours, overtime and commission; did make checking your payslip fairly challenging. Naturally the cut off was based on the managers sign off on them not when you submitted0 -
The only people who can answer the specific question are those who control payroll for your employer. As @DullGreyGuy says, cut off is normally about 2 weeks before actual pay date.1

i once had a role where the start date was the 11th of the month , however they asked for the payroll details to be sent to payroll by the 6th , so we would get the first patial month's (basic) pay on the normal pay date and not have to go six and a half to seven weeks before first pay0 -
as for different cut offs in a lot of organisers regardless of sector , but where the majority of staff are on contracted hours / Salaried, basic pay is paid forthe month of the pay date and variable elements are paid a month in arrears

Agreed, OP will have to ask the employer, and also note that in a large organisation it's worth checking that their manager has done everything that needs to be done.
In my last job, no-one could start without me knowing about it, and I made sure that they were either paid with everyone else, OR they were told it wasn't going to happen until the end of the following month. And if they were going to have to wait, I could offer an advance payment. But that was a small organisation and everyone came past my desk early on (and at regular intervals thereafter).
In larger organisations, payroll will only know about new starters if the right processes are followed. Sometimes managers either don't know what those processes are, or fail to follow them.
And only the OP knows what kind of employer they're with!Signature removed for peace of mind2 -
