i would say its not my responsibility to tell him to charge me for a service, genuinely thought it was included in the fees and to not notice for 5 years tells you something about the level of attention to detail. There is  nothing in the contract either, im happy to pay -  im just annoyed that he has let it accumulate for 5 years. If i had some something similar in my business I'd be embarrassed. Think its probably time to move accountants anyway, there have been other issues (late submission after delivering accounts months in advance) more than once. just has been a long relationship so Ive stuck with it.

what is the point of this thread then?
there is nothing in the contract, so you have no legal obligation to pay
yet you say you are happy to pay....

so you are just ranting? Change accountant and move on with life.

It seems to me that Invoicing for the Payroll once every five years is not a normal way of doing business.  If this is how the Accountant wanted it to work, then not only should it have been clearly stated in the original agreement, but also, it should have been brought to the OPs attention.
If I issued an Invoice after 5 years I would expect it to be resisted.
Why has the Accountant been issuing Invoices without charging for Payroll?
It seems to me that the Accountant has made an error and has failed to include for the Payroll Services in their invoicing and is now attempting to correct the error.
If the original agreement says an Invoice will be issued in 5 years time then pay it.
But I doubt the original agreement says that in which case reject the invoice and refuse to pay.
What we know is far, far less than what we don't know

I agree. Plus, the accountant has signed off the accounts each year, so has considered that they include all costs due from the company. To find a bill 5 years later from a third party would be one thing, but to have one from your own company suggests an error has occurred continually for the last 4 years that the accountant has failed to spot.
