Advice for when to renew/change

Last year in July we took out a European cover travel insurance policy. Now, we have booked to go to Kenya in September on a safari.
I called the current insurance company and asked his advice as to the best way to proceed. His first response was to leave changing until renewal. I pointed out that this would mean I wasn’t protected if I had to cancel (although I am not currently aware of any reason that I would have to). He agreed and then said it would be £150 up to July and could give no indication of policy cost thereafter.
Questions - have I got this totally wrong, should I not be concerned about the Kenya trip yet? Am I just stingy to think £150 is a lot of money for just over a month? (Policy expires 02.07.25). Never having gone to Africa before is that a normal sort of price idea?
thanks

I wouldn't expect your European annual to cover you at all for a Kenya trip, not even for cancellation before departure. In your position, I would buy a single trip world policy for Kenya (unless I intended to book further non European trips in the near future).

Thanks katejo, just to clarify, I wasn’t expecting our current policy to cover Kenya. The suggestion of the single trip policy is one I will look into.

Presumably your European insurance is an Annual policy. So it is completely irrelevant to your African trip.

Check the cost of an annual policy which includes an African safari

Presumably £150 is a pro rata cost to cover the risk of cancelling prior to July inclusive of an admin fee
