unidentified car part

VWAG
CZ KR1
600 120 AC
01 07
->
Still seems to run OK after this falling off but it would help me to have an idea of what has gone wrong.
I am not a car person.
Thank you.

Looks like a heat shield probably from over the silencer to stop the boot floor getting hot.1
-
It could also be a heat shield over the exhaust pipe where it runs under the petrol tank.
You should really be getting it seem to.
It might even be an MOT fail.

Check what the exhaust itself looks like too2

That level of corrosion is trying to tell you something.2

That Skoda is making itself lighter and faster. It's evolving.4

That's not the heat shield.
The heat shields are usually textured to give a greater surface area.
Usually a lighter alloy and not steel, much lighter coloured and even slightly reflective (when new).
They are moulded to the underside of the car as well, so will have lips and flat edges.
That image above is the skin of the exhaust silencer.
Exhaust silencers are usually cheep steel and double skinned as they rust from the inside and the outside.
The outer skin has rotted through and fell off.
You can see a rotten outer skin here.
Notice the heat shield, top right hand corner of the image.
