First Direct (things to note)

You said, "Not so good when you are the other side of 70 with a defective memory, have a weak mobile phone connection and the other party sounds like they are in a gold fish bowl. ". None of those things are within the control of First Direct but it does sound like your communications need improving - if you are relying on a mobile phone to talk to the outside world and you have a poor signal, perhaps you should consider getting a landline installed. Possibly not money saving but potentially life saving?
Oh it is FD specific. I've got accounts with a dozen different banks & FD are by far the worst to get set up by a long way. There's many things with them that could be a lot simpler ie the other banks do things.0 -

There's nowt wrong with FD, been with them for years. We have a sole account each and a joint account, me and the Mrs that is.
I have to do stuff for my wife, she's ok with phones and computers but not fully confident in using banking apps and buying stuff online etc.
Ok suggest you get a second phone, his and hers and then you can have the app each with your own secure keys etc.
Ok trust is the key here, I'm not suggesting you use your wife's app, log in etc to her account etc but sometimes (me) I have to for my wife or she'd never get stuff done, never apply for regular savers etc, bet others do similar.🤔0
