I'm asking this on behalf of my godson. He gets roughly 7k in student maintenance loan. His parents are divorced and he has lived with just his mum since he was 3. His dad stopped paying any support for him in 2020 but when my godson did the student loan application he declared the incomes of his mum, his dad and his dad's new partner - the amount he's been awarded seems to be based on all 3 incomes. All the advice I've read suggests that it should have just been based on the parent he lived with if the parents were divorced which would be a full maintenance award, is this right? His dad is not paying him support whilst at university. Is it possible to get a student award amount changed once it's been allocated?

Definitely correct everything for next academic year. You can make corrections to the information for 2024-25 year, use form PFF2, details here https://www.gov.uk/support-child-or-partners-student-finance-application/if-you-need-to-update-your-details

Are you sure the figures are based on 3 earners?  That would imply a total income from all 3 adults of around £48,000. (I’ve assumed living away from home and studying outside London.)

@silvercar thankyou. All 3 adults filled out forms detailing their income. His Mum's total income earned was about 16K. I'm assuming it's all 3 incomes but it could possibly be just his Mum and Dad's. Should the loan not have been just based on the income of the parent he lived with?

Yes, just the people he lives with. I suspect the automated procedures just add together the incomes of all those that submitted. He should be able to get it corrected by completing the form I mentioned.
