I got a 2nd current account with First Direct. At the time I think they offered a free £500 overdraft.
For this 2nd account, I did not want an overdraft so asked FD to set the limit to £0. Though I have never tested going overdrawn on this account.
From reading these boards, there are account (though I don't know which) that don't allow the account to have a negative balance. Sorry I can't help any further.

That is not always possible. Online payments have to be authorised by your bank before they go through. If your account does not allow overdrafts, and the payment would take your account into overdraft, the payment will be refused. Nonetheless, offline payments can cause your account to overdraw:
If your card is lost or stolen, however, and someone else overdraws your account, you should not be liable for the debt (but banks do not have to pay the first £35 of any loss before they are informed that the card is lost or stolen).
