Lawnmower recommendations pls - mulching/box collecting

Hi there,

My viking (stihl) lawnmower has died after 10+ years. We have a big lawn that takes approx 45m-1hr to mow. I don't want a ride on but want something that mulches finely but can also collect grass.

What do you recommend pls?

Thanks

The Honda/Hayter/Sthil/Husqvarna will be at the top end of the price department.  Those engines and components will be the best but you have to pay a lot more.  My Dad has a Hyundai which isn't to be overlooked.  I wouldn't say you absolutely have to have a branded machine if it's looked after and it's only for your private use.  It's not like you'll be transporting it around and using it as your job.

Get one that meets your needs, and look after it.  Most are certainly fit for purpose.  The biggest mistake people make is 1) not cleaning the deck (damp grass will just sit there and eventually rust any metal parts) and 2) leaving old fuel in it for a year.  Every time you use it, clean all the grass from underneath and spray with something like WD40 or better still ACF50.  This will protect any metal parts.  When you put it away for winter, run it out of petrol or use a fuel stabiliser.  This will prevent old fuel fouling up the carb or injectors (depending on what it has).

There are specialist lawnmower websites to look on, and they can give better advice and generally carry more expensive but better machines.  If you have a garden place nearby you might even be able to test it.  But to get a good one you're looking at 400-600 pounds.  Unless you take a chance with a used one

Honda Pro, expensive but the best machine you can buy, in domestic use it will last a lifetime with annual servicing.   As a professional landscape gardener I wouldn’t use anything else but Honda for grass cutting to a high standard.
