How many years No Claims Discount do I have?
I'm hoping there is an obvious answer to this question, but I haven't been able to find one.
In October 2023, I left Aviva with 12 years no claims discount.
I joined NFU Mutual for insurance - they don't recognise more than 8 years no claims discount. My last renewal in October 2024 shows "8 or more years NCD protected" and "You have a current NCD of 8 years". I have had no claims with NFU.
A change of car and circumstances means I need to change insurer, Admiral are currently looking like the cheapest. Their quote is quite different between 12 years and 8 years NCD...
I now have 13 years of no claims (12 years, plus 1 full year at NFU).
Admiral's website says: "A no claims discount or no claims bonus (NCB) is a discount that can be applied to an insurance policy based on the number of consecutive years the policyholder has gone without making any claims."
https://www.admiral.com/magazine/guides/car-insurance/how-the-no-claims-bonus-works
What NCD can I give Admiral? Only 8 years (most recent)? 12 years (as the document is still within the last 2 years, although they actually allow up to 3 years ago)? 13 years?
Any experience in this situation very welcome.

There are no industry rules governing NCB: each insurer applies its own.

Admiral's NCD maxes out at 9 years per the table on the above page
It's a long term and common problem, created by those who decided it would make good marketing to say they gave an NCD for longer than what was the common industry approach of 5 years. Ironically when it first happened we would give mature drivers 70% discount for 5 years NCD whereas the first insurer to offer up to 9 years "only" gave 69% discount at 8 years so it was all smoke and mirrors, they hadn't increased how much NCD you got just extended the amount of time it took you to get to maximum.
On paper you have 13 years, insurers are used to having to deal with people that have to piece together their NCD so typically if you are asked for proof you'd send both the Aviva and NFU renewal invites showing you had 12 years and went another year claim free hence now are 13 despite the NFU stating you have 8 or more years.2 -
You have 8 years, because that's what the paperwork from NFU mutual says you have.Consider what happens if you claim 13 years, but then Aviva asks to see your proof of NCD. What will you show them?If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
