I haven't used a film camera for many many years, but have been given an old SLR camera.

I want to take a test film, but when I asked at the local shop (Max Spielman) the film would be £10, then about £15 to develop it .. so near enough £1 a print

No wonder film photographhy is not as popular now .. I think !

Are there any good online processing companies please ?

Boots and Tesco still do them, advertising 18p/print for 7x5.  It says 9 working days but in my experience it's usually quicker if you go in store.  Just go in and ask.

The price is a lot higher now because so few people make use of the service.   Back when film cameras were the norm it was a lot cheaper.

have been given an old SLR camera.-

Worth checking for basics like fungus in the lens, perished
foam seals around the back cover, tears or creases in the curtain etc. before spending money on film and development.

What do you want? Do you want physical prints or just scans?

Speedy Print do 24 prints on 35mm colour film for £6.50 but then you have an almost rate P&P to pay on top so not too bad if you have multiple rolls but expensive for one. Obviously not all prints are equal and sometimes you get what you pay for.

Film can be picked up cheaper, depends on what you want.

Film is still popular but not for daily shooting, some use it as occasional self training because film is expensive you dont want to take 50 photos to keep 1 or 2 and so makes you better at ensuring you capture it right first time rather than just taking vast numbers hoping that one lucks out. Probably the main reason though is for wanting the characteristics of the film itself hence you have a load of new film manufacturers creating specialist films or people intentionally using out of date film... not many are shooting Kodak UltraMax Colour film any more (when its in date)
