Unable to claim for missed hotel nights and excursions due to delayed flight

Our flight to Cairo was delayed by two days due to the fire at Heathrow.  I thought our travel insurance would cover us for the cost of the two lost nights at the hotel and a pre-paid excursion which we missed.  However, they said they only cover additional costs incurred and not items already paid for.  Is this usual?  Do I just have to accept we won't get any money back?

Who'd you buy your policy from? If they have levels of cover, what level did you buy?

Travel insurance varies significantly between policies and buying the cheapest can end up being expensive.

Was the trip booked as a package or separate bookings?  If the former, the package organiser is likely to be on the hook to offer a price reduction....

Did your policy cover 'consequential losses' which is often an added extra?
