Placement year possibly becoming a 3rd year of study

My son is planning to do a placement year from September this year (25/26) and complete his final year next year (26/27). He will be applying for his reduced tuition loan soon and no maintenance loan.
But what happens if he can’t get a placement and decides to do his 3rd year instead this year. If he’s already applied for the reduced loan, can he amend it and apply for the maintenance loan too?
I’m starting to panic a little about this and I’d be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

Why would he have a reduced loan due to a placement? Is it a compulsory part of the course? I did placements year 2 & 3 and got loans.Dalek01 said:My son is planning to do a placement year from September this year (25/26) and complete his final year next year (26/27). If a placement year is part of the course and means you are a student at the university and not on placement for less than 10 weeks of the year, the student loan consists of the (reduced) tuition fees for the placement year plus a maintenance loan that is currently slight above £3k, reduced to ~£2.3k for those living at home. If the placement is unpaid service then you are entitled to the full means tested maintenance.marcia_ said:
