I Pad locked again!

'Nanny' (mother in law) has had an ipad for about ten years now.
She's on her second one now. Can't remember exactly which model but it can no longer update the ios.
For about the 4th time now, in the last couple of years, she has managed to lock herself out of it - it says <<security lockout - try again in 1 hour>>
This only seems to happen when we are away (purely coincidental, I'm sure) and I need to plug it into itunes to restore it when I'm home
It has never had a passcode on it and we don't really want one - she or it rarely leave the house.
There's no personal information on there - she just uses it for news and solitaire!
Is there a foolproof way of stopping this happening?
Of course, she denies doing anything wrong, but hey ho!

My android devices do this occasionally. No idea why other than I must have accidently logged out on one and then tried to log on on another and it goes into high security alert. Because it happens only once every 18 months or so I can't remember my password so need to go through alternative security.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. I googled 'ipad mode for elderly' and it seems that there are settings for Guided Access and Assistive Access. I suggest taking a look.
Incidentally, why is the iPad no longer being updated? M8ne is 7 years old, and it still updates regularly, although for larger updates I need to clear some space in the memory. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?1 -

Many thanks - worth investigation ...

In case it helps, my one is running iPadOS 17.7.6.
It’s an iPad (6th generation).

We had exactly the same problem with our MIL, despite there being no password set, (??). So we just set up the password to be her birthday, (ddmmyy), so at least she could remember it.NB a a side issue, I note on her latest Ipad the option to "turn off" the need for the passcode to start it up is "grayed out", ie you can't turn it off??.."It's everybody's fault but mine...."1

If it’s an older iPad that’s no longer supported with updates, the security systems can get a bit quirky, especially if iCloud or Find My is still active in the background.
