Dandelions in Lawn

We have a large number of dandelions in the lawn
They appear overnight - I assume due to seeds blown from a front garden across the road - where they appear to cultivate weeds ! The day after the lawn is cut - they sprout up to 6 inches....
What can we do about these yellow pests ?

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

You could leave the dandelions for the insects and birds?
Once they have flowered and seeded you can then dig them up

I used a Verdone weedkiller on lawn weeds, very successful. There may be an alternative nowadays.

I pull the yellow head off so they don’t seed. Also regular cutting , and digging the root out. It’s hard when the we live near a field full of them. But it’s either that or leave for the insects.

Learn how to make dandelion wine or dandelion champagne

I can vouch for the champagne, make now, ready for Christmas
Just search on dandelion champagne, it'll bring up wine as well

Then your yellow pests become summer sunshine for mid-winter

Making the grass grow better and thicker will help a lot.
No mow may is now so pick the heads off until the grass smothers the plants.

Digging them out useless if you have a seed source nearby as it'll be a permanent job.
I do occasionally but mostly pick the heads off.

There is weed and feed stuff for lawns that's easy to apply.
Unfortunately a lot of the good and easy stuff is banned now but there used to be Lawn Sand which was basically dried urea but you can make your own for free 😉

Alternative method is to grow them wall to wall and they'll look glorious for a while. Neighbours may not be so happy.

A weed and feed application at the appropriate time of the year will kill them and other weeds off.

Get chickens. The chicken orchard is the only place on our smallholding where there are no dandelions!
Anywhere else, especially at this time of year.....
