What's this noise??
I have a Citroen Saxo. Recently it has been making a banging noise somewhere towards the rear of the car. It only used to happen when the car was in second gear and I took my foot off the accelerator, but recently it's been happening when the car is in third gear and I take my foot off the accelerator. It never happens in 1st, 4th or 5th gear.
I'm a bit worried about being ripped off when I take it to a garage (being a girl and all ) so was wondering if anyone had a similar experience or wanted to hazard a gues at what might be wrong and/or what it might cost to put right:A

No idea but my fiesta used to shake and make horrendous noises whenever I reached 60mph then settle down when it got to 65?!!
You could try googling for help on websites helping useless girlies like us...I did have a site for Q&As but forgotten and I'm not even blonde sorry... There will be someone I am sure who will come up with a sensible answer soon.
I wouldn't be too panicky if the rattle isn't affecting the cars performance or safety in any way...something may just have come a little loose.
A good local little garage should be kind enough to take a look and not charge much can you not get a recommendation from someone you work with?0 -
could be anything,loose exhaust,broken tailpipe/back box,could be a shock absorber,could be a suspension bush,could be any of these or more....work permit granted!0

Agree with goldspanners. Once you've narrowed it down a little Claire it might be worth asking on the Saxo owners forums for their advice:

It will probably go away once you have lost that 2 Stone...0

Well at least Claire is attempting to lose some weight, good for her.
I wish her well.
BTW, if you have nothing better to do than follow me around the forum making critical comments, then may I politely suggest that you target someone else, I do not have a lot of patience with TROLLS ..0 -

No I thought your comment was very offensive to the OP! to be fair!
as for the problem with the car, I had AX that had the same problem that turned out to be a problem with the gear box, in 2nd gear, never had it in any of the others... I traded it in though against a new one, so never found out how much it was to repair, HTH you op xIf we attempt nothing, then we can achieve nothing. But if we try and fail, we still can gain.0 -
while the car is cold hold the tailpipe of the exhaust(the bit that pokes out the back) and see if it wiggles about a lot,if you can jack the rear of the car up one side at a time, then hold the whell top and bottom and rock it in and out(push in at top pull out at bottom) to see if there is any movement, then repeat rocking movement on the sides,
It sounds more to me like a mounting either on the gearbox or rear of engine has worn,
if it makes a banging noise going over bumps then it is more likely to be a rear wishbone bush,

hope you have managed to sort this problem out with your car xIf we attempt nothing, then we can achieve nothing. But if we try and fail, we still can gain.0

Are you sure the noise is in the back, if it is in the back it is unlikely to be related to the gear the car is in as everything is at the front of the car.
Have you tried going out for a drive with a passenger in the front and in the back to try and "triangulate" where the noise is coming from.
My wife had a loud rattle in the "back" of her car, it was the bonnet stay not clipped in place! Very difficult to track down rattles/noises in car ! Good luck.0
