I have been told by my utilities company that my electric meter certification is coming to an end and to book for a smart meter to be installed. I have never heard of this before and can't seem to find out when and if it is due to expire, i have looed on the national database but it just says it come under scottish power, i am now trying to contact Scottish Power to get more information, can i just upgrade my meter as I really don't want a smart meter, also what will happen if I do nothing, will i be cut off ?

    Why not?

And no, the only meters available now are smart meters.

You have to have a new meter for safety reasons and I don't think you can get a different one.
I actually have the direct telephone number for the meter installers, it was a total faff to get it because Scottish Power gave me two defunct numbers that haven't been in use for years
Call 0808 156 9150 and speak to the very, very nice people there they will be able to answer your questions. Note it does take them a long time to answer the 'phone so be patient! They made a special effort to sort a problem for me that Scottish Power didn't care about

I had a similar communication from my supplier 2 years ago; like you I'm not keen to switch to a smart meter.

I ignored the letter and 2 years later nothing has happened; it will come but no need to speed the process along. Many others have posted of similar demands but inaction seems to be working (unlike many of the smart meters)

Your utility company is responsible for making sure THEIR meter is certified and they will replace meters that are at the end of their working life.

You, like everybody else, will get a smart meter as a replacement.

Initially they will pester you but ultimately resistance is futile and I believe they can get a warrant to enter and change the meter, but that is not likely.

Given this is MSE & Smart meters allow for cheaper tariffs. Why not?

perhaps it is time now for that push to get everyone on smart meters & failure to have one fitted means higher standing charges?

    Any source for that mis-information?

16% of "Which" members (10,000+ surveyed) reported that they had had problems within the previous 12 months

What sort of problems, with the meter or the IHD, any breakdown of the figures or is it a bland statement?
Which lurks behind a paywall so checking is futile .100% of non-which members in a survey say they haven’t had a problem with the meter, and the same percentage replied that they can’t remember where they put their IHD.

What about those smart meters that don't send regular meter readings for time of use times?

Not part of the quote: My IHD has never worked since installation and the Bright app can't read my Gas meter either.  I haven't changed my habits since installed.
