Liquid Gold The Leeds Building Society

Can anyone please help me.
I have a old blue passbook which in 1988 had £600 in it.  I cant find out who or where i should go to as I understand that Halifax took over these accounts.  I have tried on line and on the phone and drawn a blank. Any contact details would be grateful received.
Also would I be able to claim for he up to date interest on the account from 1988 to 2025?
Please advise.
Thank you

I'd suggest that the best place to start would be a subject access request to Halifax's data protection officer, requesting all details pertaining to the account in question:

    https://www.halifax.co.uk/helpcentre/legal-information/privacy/data-privacy-notice.html

The fact that you have a passbook doesn't in itself signify that the account is still open with money in it, but start with their side of the story in order to ascertain what, if anything, can be done from there....

    1. As eskbanker says, you need to contact the Halifax.
    2. Whos account is it?
    3. The original provider was the Leeds Permanent Building Society and not the Leeds Building Society (which is around today).
    4. Was transferred to the Halifax (after the Leeds Permeant merged with the Halifax in 1995).

Liquid Gold - a blast from the past! I used to have one of those accounts. "Arthur Daley" used to advertise them.
Yeah, my first Building society account opened around 1992. Still have my passbook.

Liquid Gold account was a Leeds Permanent Building Society account and operated using a passbook.  Halifax took over all Leeds Permanent accounts so chances are they have labelled it as dormant.  Try the link as @eskbanker suggests to see if they can find out what happened to it.

There is also a link on MSE about finding lost accounts.  Find lost or dormant bank accounts: Reclaim cash – MSE

Assuming that the account still exists and that you didn't withdraw the money and forget about it some time over the last 37 years then yes you should be able to claim any interest due over that time.

You shouldn't expect the interest rate to have stayed at 8%, or whatever it was in 1988, for the last 37 years of course, and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if it had dropped to a very low rate or even zero somewhere along the way.

Passbooks aren't bearer bonds and the common end to this story is that the money was withdrawn long ago but there's no harm asking.

I remember there were regular complaints about the rate on the Liquid Gold account falling to next to nothing.

From 2009: "Accounts such as Halifax's Liquid Gold and Saver Reward, Nationwide's CashBuilder and HSBC's Premier Savings, pay only 0.1% on deposits below £10,000."

The confusion is understandable, given that the Leeds Permanent was commonly referred to as "the Leeds" and IIRC often omitted the "Permanent" part of their name in their adverts, similarly to how the bank whose official name is National Westminster Bank plc generally refers to itself as "NatWest" in adverts.

"Leeds and Holbeck Building Society" changed its name to  "Leeds Building Society" in 2005.
