Online or By Post?

To accompany the IHT400, I'll need to submit at least four schedules and a copy Power of Attorney, which I'll have to scan.  An online application will save the cost of postage, and would probably be quicker in terms of obtaining Grant of Probate, but other than that is there any advantage?

While the probate application itself can be made online to HMCTS, I believe you have to physically post the IHT400 schedules to HMRC (and don't forget a copy of the will, if it exists). Would be interested if you know otherwise.

HMRC did trial online application a decade ago, but it's now discontinued and they are currently working to replace it.

Yes. Had this confirmed to me by HMRC. I have now submitted hard copy of IHT400 plus all the schedules, will, LPA and will and grant of probate for the deceased’s late husband as I’m applying to transfer his unused IHT nil rate band. Used IHT423 to pay IHT. Thankfully I rang to check HMRC had received this. They hadn’t. Bank had not acted on it. They have now. It would have caused a delay. HMRC confirmed that they are currently working a 15 working day from receipt delay.
