Free dividend from RBS as a taxpayer

I’ve seen on social media that any taxpayer can go into any branch of RBS or NatWest and claim their share of the UK dividend. Apparently about £8,000. I can’t help feeling that this is one of those “if it seems too good to be true it probably is” stories.  I thought the RBS shares were held by the Treasury. Anyone heard this story?

That's a wind-up. £8,000 in total shared between millions of people? £8,000 each? No chance.

RBS - renamed NatWest a couple of years ago - is listed on the stockmarket but the government still owns some proportion of its shares.

Are you quite sure about that, the op said they had seen it on social media, surely that must add a modicum of reassurance 😉

I imagine from the same group that says council tax does not legally have to be paid by any freeman of the land?

You didn't really think there was one iota of truth in the claim, did you?

I don't believe anything I see on social media unless it's endorsed by Martin Lewis.
I hope that's as joke, as ML is often used in Scam adverts (including deep fake videos that can easily fool people).

Pff, I heard that as the government gives you a name like JOHN SMITH you just need to use your real name of John Smith and can ignore all laws and taxes ;)

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Great!  Why don't you toddle on down to your nearest RBS/NatWest branch and attempt to exercise this 'right', and report back?  We'll get the popcorn ready....
