Halifax bank note counting machines

Had a problem paying cash at the Halifax, I asked the teller to please count the money out first as I have had problems before with the machines not counting arcuately due to bent , folded notes. They would and fed my money into the machine and then said it was quite a bit short. Id counted the money out twice before going into branch. I have mad e a complaint but the say that its no longer a requirement to count cash out but once the money is in the machine out of sight I cant see if there was any problem with the total. It just seems so wrong and this becomes a trust issue with the bank now. Anyone else had this king of problem? Thank you.

I always ensure notes are not folded when paying cash into the machines...at Halifax and also HSBC.  The machines are quite advanced though.  So I suspect there was something wrong with some of the notes you were trying to pay in

When I pay notes into the Halifax machine, I already know there are no folded notes (I unfolded and staightened them as I was counting them), and what the total should be. Then the machine counts the notes, displays the total and offers two options - deposit or cancel. If the total ever differed from what I knew it to be I would select cancel and get the notes back. It's never happened to me.

I think he means at the counter, they put it through a note counter machine they have there. But begs the question if the total is different why not just ask for them back?

It isn't clear, but "...the money is in the machine out of sight..." suggests the OP is talking about a machine in the wall, rather than a counting machine on the teller's desk.

    But he mentions a teller.

All the Halifax branches i have ever paid money into have the note counter next to the staff member

There's often a bank staff member by the automated paying in machine(s) to assist, like @Section62 "in the machine out of sight" implies use of an automated paying in machine.

Whilst it is a very long time since I paid cash into an account the first question asked is 'how much is there'.  If I didn't know I had to count it myself first and this figure is then confirmed by the teller after the have counted it.
