As of October 2025, 1st and 2nd gen Next thermostats will have the majority of functionality switched off by Google. Owners will no longer be able to control the temperature via app or other smart home devices, all scheduling will be lost, and home/away assist will stop working. You will still be able to adjust the temperature manually on the wall, and that's it!.

I wonder what other smart home devices Google are planning to brick in the future? Looks like I bought into the wrong smart home ecosystem...  :(

When buying smart home devices, I always look at those which can be controlled locally via Home Assistant. Drayton Wiser has been my goto for heating since 2017 and it's a superb locally controlled system.

Operating in the same manner s Microsoft. Make a product redundant. Force customers to upgrade.

3rd Gen is no longer supported in the UK . 4th Gen isn't available in the UK market.

Well they don't make it easy/obvious to work out which generation nest you might have via the app.

However, there are some pictures online

Cloud eco systems are flawed for this reason, I have never used home assistant but it constantly comes up everywhere, so will try it at some point.

You start off with something simple to control your heating system (as I did), and before you know it, you are trying to automate everything and collect data on anything. It is a rabbit hole that can be difficult to get out of :p
On the plus side, you are not held hostage to remote servers being online 24/7 for ever more.
Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

I'm stuck in that rabbit hole at the moment installing flow sensors for monitoring water usage. An absorbing hobby with practical benefits.

On the subject of smart technology, it's always worth buying something that's Home Assistant compatible even if you're not interested or tech savvy enough to actually use Home Assistant (IMHO). The point is that if it works with HA it's open enough for some enterprising individual to offer an alternative online portal if the original supplier withdraws support or whatever.

I expect there will be EU legislation around this as it becomes a wider spread issue but seems unlikely that the US will do the same given the political clout of big tech there. Plenty of scope for a trade war in years to come.....

2nd Gen Nest Thermostats were discontinued ten years ago, 1st Gen thirteen years ago, I would say that is an entirely reasonable period of time to support a smart product. I would not expect a company to keep indefinitely supporting a product and it would not be reasonable to try to compel them to do so.

I'd agree with that. The issue I have is not so much that they are dicontinuing support, more that they are preventing others from offering that support after they have decided not to.
