Maybe a silly question but where do you check the calculated interest? I can't find it on the HMRC app
Look for "Annual Tax Summary" (mine's at the bottom), the link takes you away from the app and onto the HMRC website. Select which tax year which you want (for mine, the most recent is 2023-2024), click on "Your income and taxes", then "Your taxable income". Mine shows two sources of income - "Employment" and "Other income (including interest)".

When I follow the link, I only see:
"How your tax was spent for the tax year..."

If you want to know what they know about before they do their calculation and adjust your tax code, then you'd need to phone them or write to them. Otherwise you can wait and then check their total matches yours when they send you their calculation.
Do they send the calculation by post?

As an added complication, I'm registered for self assessment due to an HMRC error years ago - I never actually completed a self assessment, but am still registered. Would this affect how HMRC make contact? (I'm very far from the £10k interest threshold, and will only be due to pay tax on about £80.)

You're asking the wrong person as I complete a tax return. But if they need to collect tax by adjusting your tax code, they will provide some calculations with the notice of coding.

At the top it says "You may see a general Annual Tax Summary as not everyone will have a personal one for each tax year. This may be because no income tax was paid for that year, or HMRC is waiting for information such as a change of address."

That's strange, I don't see a personal one for any tax year, despite my income showing correctly in "your PAYE income summary" and having not changed jobs or address for a few years.

I lost some of that stuff when I registered for self assessment, so it is possible those tax accounts are set up differently.

On the website, go to Annual Tax Summary (bottom right row), select the year and then click "Your Income and taxes" then on "Your taxable income". That has the employment + interest for the year.

Mine for 2023/24 is £58 which is silly as it's nowhere near that low but as it was under £1000 I let it go.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
