If the OP signed up for a year's membership, the fact that it was to be paid in two instalments doesn't mean they haven't committed to pay for the whole year.
A more obvious example is gyms / health clubs where an annual membership is often paid in "easy" monthly instalments by direct debit. Those that try to cancel mid way through the year by stopping the DD are frequently pursued (successfully) for the remaining balance.
So, I'd suggest being grateful to only have to pay something roughly pro rata for the months they have been a member.1 -

How much is due to be paid & are you sure the £500 was a deposit & not part payment for the year?No one said this deposit was non refundable as I have checked anything I received from the club.
£104.16 a month.
Jan to May 5 Months. So works out about what you have already paid. Taking the tag the 3 months on the end.0 -
I joined my local on a similar deal.
in my case it was never described as a 'deposit' its just an initial payment - in fact when i go into my account, the initial up front costs is mostly the fees outside of the clubs control (England Golf , i had a locker, so on)
its an unfortunate situation but I cant see any reason why the golf club would refund unless they were in a particularly nice and giving mood, considering the majority are not exactly pulling in as much as people would think, its not going to happen
