LV Britannia Rescue Auto Renewal

This evening was shocked to discover that when trying to buy breakdown cover LV's Britannia Rescue will not allow you to pay monthly by direct debit payment unless the customer signs up for auto renewal.
Is this right and proper or another sneaky way insurers are trying to trick the consumer?

I wasn't aware of the issue you described but, in my experience, auto renewal doesn't mean your policy will auto renew if that makes sense. It only happens if you do nothing.
I have it set up on my car policy and they send a reminder and a renewal price well in advance of the renewal date. Then I check to see if the renewal price is competitive and, if it's not (and my existing company won't match the best price) I just tell them I won't be renewing.
I don't know if that's standard with all policies but that's my experience.

It sounds like it was clear to you that this is their business policy, and you are free to take your business elsewhere if you don't like their T&Cs.But as per the previous poster, auto-renewal is no big deal usually. You'll get a reminder to say your policy will auto-renew, at which point you can shop around and cancel if you wish. And while it's not usually recommended to blindly auto-renew without shopping around first, it does at least give you peace of mind that you're still covered (albeit perhaps at a higher cost than you could get elsewhere) if you forget to buy another policy yourself.
