I have a mains cable running underground from house to garden shed whose route I need to trace. There is a plethora of devices on Amazon that will do this (like the NOYAFA 818L) but wondered whether anyone has any experience of using one.

Even with the best cat and genny you are never 100% sure until you dig to confirm. You could be tracing a water pipe. If using a genny you should have I think 10m serpation between genny and tracer as the tracer will pick up the signal through the air as it is a radio signal.Cable should be under load while tracing if no genny is being used.
    Costing £1800

Try getting this moved, or delete and repost on the DIY forum.
More people who play with this sort of stuff.

Me I won't take a risk with mains water, gas or electric. It's not just getting it wrong but how to put it right.

Been digging a trench over the weekend to relay a drain. Plastic gas pipe rather close to the surface barely a spade's width from the drain pipe. Digging by hand meant that there was minimal risk to either the gas pipe or myself.
Assuming the cable @Nurby is dealing with is SWA, it will be low risk if digging by hand.
