Economy 7 Being phased out??
My late mother's apartment is in a Mccarthy and Stone block - it is rented out. All heating is electric, with night storage heaters. We were planning to replace one, but the complex manager told me "The actual Meter Technology for Economy 7 was deactivated on the 31st March 2025 and Economy 7 is being phased out completely by the 30th June 2025. The reason for this the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will be shut down as all coal-fire Power Stations are being decommissioned." I know about the RTS and as we got a smart meter several years ago, I assume we are alright. Other than that, what is he talking about???

It sounds like this guy is talking nonsense. Coal-fired powerstations are nothing to do with RTS. RTS is being shutdown because the costs of keeping it running are uneconomic.Economy 7 is not being phased out. There are many meters out there with fixed switching times eg. midnight and 6am.Smart Meters can be configured with fixed switching times or switching times that are controlled remotely.2

The complex manager is an idiot - coal fired power stations shutting down means the RTS being turned off? How much wrongness was he trying to cram into one paragraph?
Economy 7 continues just fine. You have a smart meter and have nothing to worry about: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/replacing-your-radio-teleswitch-electricity-meter
I hope the complex manager isn't causing residents unnecessary stress. Send him the above link.1 -
He's talking total nonsense and should be ignored. Better still, politely advise him so that he doesn't mislead others. What's intended to replace the storage heater? Hope you're not about to make a big mistake...2

The property will likely need to have a smart meter installed and may need some tweaks to wiring depending on how old the installation and consumer unit(s) are, but the meter will be installed for free and any changes would be a few hundred at most.1 -

Nonsense.Linking RTS radio signal to coal fired power - really - wow.Exactly the sort of confused - but if said with authority - enough to sound convincing - no one should be spouting - especially dare I say it in the context of what is I assume one of their retirement complexes. Its difficult enough for many to keep track - without misinformation.NSH are far from dead - arguably especially for flats - and over 2 million homes still on E7 last year. And many on RTS are now being fitted with the old E10 variant of fixed TOU tariffs (Ovo doing that for many of their old SSE THTC customers in NE).1
