Do you have a cost effective tariff with EDF without a smart meter or are you not concerned at the moment ?

I choose a EDF tariff and booked a smart meter installation but have blocked of the gas meter upstairs in the junk room as had to empty a van .
So I have just been rebooking .....meaning kicking the can down the road until I have a big clear out .
The gas meter is inside a made to size wooden box thats accessable but very tight for room but I dont really want to dismantle it for easier access .
So I have just been rebooking the date again and again .

These days paying the bills is priority so stopping work isnt .
I read on MSE in general all this being forced to do this and that ......naughty naughty naughty...its alot of scare mongering bolly olly .
My meters been out of date for years and works fine .

How do you know your meter is working fine and not under- or over- reporting the amount of energy you use?

I have noticed the school master "we must do as we are told mentality posts on MSE  or doom and gloom will beset you".
Don't know what your point is there. Thanks to our smart meter we earn hundreds of pounds a year in electricity export, and when we need to import it averages under 10p/kWh. I wouldn't be in a hurry to give that up just to make some sort of point.
Read the first line of the opening post regarding badgering ie. the point of the whole thread..."  I'm being badgered about installing a smart meter to the point of harassment."
... and also the "will be forced to have a smart meter" comments .

...by reporting, I mean reporting in a technical sense, i.e. on the screen / dials. So to put it another way, how do you know your meter is not over- or under- measuring and displaying the amount of energy you are reading and reporting to the energy company. Or how do you know it's still accurate? Hope this makes more sense to you....

The gas would be impossible to be over reading currently over the last year ...thats a certainty I wont explain because it would just set the numptys off on another unrelated tangent .

Under reading is possible of course but is highly doubtful I check it each month sending in readings .
The gas man checks it annually but assume he does his work from a safety aspect and not meter accuracy .
As a matter of fact the gas man stated regarding getting a smart meter .....dont ...leave it as long as possible .
That may have changed of course so see what he says this year .

The gas inspector might read it annually but it would be very unusual indeed if they check the calibration.

It was really intended as a rhetorical question as clearly if it hasn't been calibrated, you don't know whether it's slowly drifted over time or not. You're just guessing - admittedly an informed guess, but still a guess. You might be happy to guess but I think you have to accept that your energy company may not and as the meter belongs to them it's reasonable and their prerogative (as well as being their legal obligation) to swap out old meters.

Bottom line is that the direction of travel on smart meters is clear and anyone who resists is likely to be continually badgered - the more the better IMHO, the decision has been made so let's just stop whinging and get this done. The obstructive behaviour really does cause an awful lot of completely unnecessary work for the suppliers (and self-inflicted hassle for the customers), the cost of which filters through to standing charges.

Rather than continual reminders they should just set a deadline, and if you don't cooperate then disconnect the supply.

No need for auch draconian measures.   Over the years I have had a few meters changed.  You receive notification it needs to be changed, an appointment is made and the job is done.  If access is refused the utility companies have powers already.

That's all well and good - IF the utility companies actually turned up after making appointments to fit smart meters. For example, EDF made three appointments in late 2023 to fit a smart gas meter - cancelled every time (with enuf notice to avoid compensation). The issue was that the centralised operations of EDF were chasing targets - the local agents either had no meters of no available staff!
Only got a smart gas meter after switching to Octopus and waiting 12 months !!
I'm led to believe that the situation hasn't got any better.
