Thankyou, strangely  enough that thought about winter usage had crossed my mind

On using just touch, the flow pipe from the boiler gets red hot and the return takes quite a while to get anywhere as hot

The return should be 15-20°C cooler than the flow. And depending on flow rate, total water volume of the heating system, and rate limit of the boiler, it could take upwards of 30 minutes for the return to get close to the flow temperature.

A wet finger is no where accurate enough to gauge the temperature of either pipe. To do it properly requires a thermometer (infrared non-contact type can be a bit iffy on pipes).
