How should I clean a vintage wool rug without causing damage

These  stains then stand out as the rest of the rugs colours look bright and great .....except for the nasty stain that may not be removed.

Which I said a specialist company, not just any company. 

There are companies who deal with oriental  rugs etc.
 
It will mean doing some research but if the vintage rug is of value ( money or sentimental) then it is worth doing.

Specialist does not mean they can remove all stains from natural fibres .

You pay the money and you take your chances .
