Amazon account hacked advise please?

This happened earlier this month 7th April. My Amazon account got hacked and they bought £200 gift cards I saw it first as a pending payment in my Barclays Bank account. Stopped my cards and spoke to both Amazon and Barclays immediately.
Amazon have been no help so far just saying they’re investigating and Barclays initially said Amazon would stop it and sort out. It didn’t it went through!
I then called back Barclays and was told yes they can see transaction and new debit cards ordered and on there way. But no fraud reported…I won’t bore everyone but obviously retold events leading up to me cancelling my cards. Barclays adviser asked me lots of questions, but the way she asked was hostile and accusatory. I had to ask her to stop! She did calm down a bit as I was explaining I’d thankfully not been in this position before and didn’t understand how it could have happened.

I’ve since read other people’s comments about not storing a card on Amazon. I had a Prime account for ten years and cards on there. But now I just don’t feel safe at all.

How do I get my stolen money back is it Amazon that allowed it or Barclays?

I’m new to this and honestly I’m a bit shaken must be awful for those people who get hacked for a lot more money!

I can't answer your question, but I had something similar in they got into my topcashback account - luckily nothing was withdrawn as they couldn't my security quesiton, they changed password - I got mya ccount back with the earnings.  Anyway it was suggested to go to https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and type in my email address.

Basically my email address with passwords was leaked - they will use loads of accounts using these details to see what works.

Result: I changed my passwords on every site I use

I always check that site too for any recent breaches.

So don't leave cash balances sitting around on cashback sites.

And use a different, long, complicated password for every site you have an account for.

And enable 2FA on every site that has it available.

My Amazon and Google accounts are linked to the same debit card - Tesco Clubcard+ with £5 on it. Can shift funds onto it as and when required.

Never nice being questioned on fraud. But remember they are just doing their job, & it's not that they are not accusing you. It's a case of getting the info required to get to the root cause.

You are going to have to ask Barclays to treat this as fraud, & hope Amazon do not contest it.

The real question is how did your account get hacked. Any strange emails or such?

If you buy gift cards on amazon aren't they sent to your registered email address?
Are all your details correct on your amazon account? If you login can you see the fraudulent transactions?
When you use that card to make an amazon purchase do you have to authorise it through 2FA?

For any website with card details have you got a decent strength password and 2FA enabled?
Are all the cards stored going to be used for that website's services?

Whilst it won't stop the determined it will make it harder for them..

  • So it seems Banks refund you…..Barclays have sent me a standard letter to complete and send back. Still not sure if they accept my account was hacked. I’ll update.
I’ve changed passwords on everything and in future will store a card on the site with a tiny balance and top up as required….bonus is so far I’ve saved a lot by not spending on Amazon it was far too easy!
I won’t leave cards on sites anymore lesson learnt.

Can you see the fraudulent transactions in your order history?
All my payment methods on amazon have expired, just in case they ever try to charge me for prime. I buy amazon gift cards from supermarkets when I'm planning to make a purchase
