I have recently bought a new Windows 11 laptop and have it up and running.
I am baffled as to why, when turning it on, it displays my email address above the box where I sign-in to get to the home screen.
Surely this is a security issue for prying eyes in cafes/pubs etc.?
My Windows 10 computers never did this.
I have repeatedly gone to Settings>Sign-in Options, then toggled off "Show account details such as my email address on sign-in screen"
I have tried signing out as well as staying signed in, but each time my email address appears when starting my laptop.
Please advise.
Thank you.

Your email address is probably your user account name. You can usually change that in settings.

After toggling the setting off did you 'Restart' the machine? With Windows 10 & 11 'Shutdown/Reboot' is not enough to reset many of the Windows settings, you need to 'Restart' to do the full job.(Yes it's counter intuitive because it used to be the other way round on older Windows versions).0

If you use a Microsoft Account, Windows 11 often ignores this privacy setting and still shows your email on the sign-in screen. Trying logging into your Microsoft cloud account online and ensure a name and profile picture are set.0

I am at a loss and really confused.
Yes, I tried signing out, restarting and also switching off then starting up again.
As suggested, the option was ignored by Windows 11.
On trying to sign back into my Microsoft account, it told me repeatedly that the last 4 digits of my mobile phone number were incorrect, although I checked I had them correct just prior to this.
I have done a full computer reset, installing windows again and the computer gives me no option but to set up a Microsoft account and I cannot skip this step at all.
I an still seeing my email address flash up on starting the computer?
I am getting frustrated.0 -

To bypass the Microsoft Account screen during the OOBE setup. Press Shift + F10 to open the Command Prompt. Notice the Accessibility options now opens settings and a temporary Local Account is used. Use this to disable your wireless card. Then press Shift + F10 and input OOBE\BYPASSNRO then allow the computer to reboot. During the Setup, select I don't have Internet. Once your have finished the OOBE setup, open up Settings and re-enable your wireless card.

Don't forget nowadays Windows 11 encrypts your hard drive by default - you may or may not want this and may or may not want to turn it off1

My Win11 screen displays the name I use for my One Drive, I guess the OP used his email address, hence why it shows that. You don’t have to use your real name…
Win11 Home, ver 24H2 and later, encrypts the drive by default and saves the key on One Drive. The increased security it offers is much better than no encryption, but as we know security also comes at the cost of needing to pay attention to what you are doing when setting up a PC/laptop.0 -
