Car insurance cancelled immediately in cooling off period, now penalised on quotes

Insurance bought the day before car collection. That evening the dealer cancelled the deal due to warning light revealing engine problems with the vehicle.
Same type of car now sourced, instead of quotes circa £32 pcm, all were £50+. How can this be fair? 1st insurer refuses to discuss the matter

How far apart (in days) were the quotes? Did they have the same policy start date?

Prices can and do change based on dates (eg, time between policy purchase and policy start date). I think you'll have a hard time proving any increase is due to you cancelling, unless the insurer has confirmed this.

So different quote dates and different policy start dates. What makes you so sure the difference is due to you cancelling the policy?

It could well be the case, and I suspect they'd be within their right to do that if they so chose.

Ok but it seems unfair, especially when they refuse to explain the difference

The actuaries are the ones who devise the (very complex) algorithms that are used by computer systems to the calculate premiums. The people you speak on the phone will not be able to explain any difference.

It could even be a different company (underwriter) who is performing the premium calculation, and not anyone at the company you are dealing with.

If you're not happy with the quote, simply go elsewhere.

I understand, have gone elsewhere but all quotes had increased to similar amounts or more
