Moving van cost?

I moved 3 miles back in January 2024, from and to, a 2 bed house and the removal company I had charged me £600. They provided everything from mattress covers, wardrobe boxes, shrink wrapped all large furniture to protect it, dismantled beds, unplumbed kitchen appliances, protection for TVs and picture frames. Put everything together and plumbed everything in the new house as well as putting everything where it needed to go. They were amazing. They came to my house and gave me a quote, which I then had in writing.1

It's very heavy work, I hope your budget allows for you to employ a company.
My daughter and her boyfriend bought a house last December, they hadn't been told the young couple were separating. They were moving out themselves and had hired a van and still weren't out by late afternoon and my daughter's removal men offered to help. She texted me at 6 pm to say they were finally in.£216 saved 24 October 20140 -

one thing that is often not mentioned is that if you pack things like china yourself and some gets broken the removal firm may not pay out.1 -
I would definitely pay for a packing service if I move again. I didn't realise how long it would take me to pack the kitchen - so many plates and glasses! I was on my knees scrubbing the floor when my son turned up by surprise, I was so glad of his help.£216 saved 24 October 20142

Websites such as AnyVan.com will allow you to get an estimate based on what you are moving, the source and destination address, and your intended moving date. These have typically been medium sized trucks for me, not vans.
I've always packed myself. Not to save money but to go through things and work out what I can dispose of/recycle. It's a terrible job though, and I'm jealous of the better organised who can get others to pack for them.
In my case, my only moves since 2005 have been one of 500 metres, and another even shorter. Oh, and I organised (and paid for) an ex-partner to move about 1km. All through the AnyVan website, but I've no reason to think it better than other ways of arranging a moving van. Perhaps laziness has struck and I've gone with what I know.
I always pay for an extra person as it's not much extra. I've heard of people who paid for just a driver, and two people turned up anyway.

one thing that is often not mentioned is that if you pack things like china yourself and some gets broken the removal firm may not pay out.One thing that occurs to me as to why the packing service is reasonably cheap on top of the move costs, is that do removals firms prefer to know what they will be facing as they will be packing stuff themselves, rather than dealing with the average person's cack handed packing into random boxes that don't fit will in the vans?I packed the first time I moved, to move in with my OH. It took me the best part of a month doing bits and pieces in the evenings after work. I vowed never to DIY again.Make £2025 in 2025

My son says he is never moving again! We saw a similar situation opposite our house a few years ago. The couple were splitting and a DIY move took place to somewhere nearby. The removals for the new people ended up helping load the outgoing folks van, and a lot of the new people's stuff ended up being offloaded into the garage. We also had neighbours who moved 3 doors down the street from a rental to a purchase. They hired a removals company who loaded into vans, moved them only a few yards and unloaded into the the new house.Make £2025 in 2025

teaselMay said:Agree, you're going to need to ask for quotes for your specific circumstances. I'm moving 90 miles, 1 man LWB 3.5 tonne van, one trip, £400. I'm hoping timing will work to do it in a £60-70 +diesel hire van with friends. But that would move all of the two person items.
Good luck with that.
My wife and I moved 120 miles and we couldn't get ours in a 7.5 tonne van. Fortunately, we had use of a lock-up.
It took 2 full loads.
I don't think I could move with a 3.5 tonne truck since I was a student and had little furniture.0
