Etihad charged me £1600 at the desk to take 3 suitcases to Australia! How can I get my money back?

Did you not get email confirmation when you booked showing the baggage allowance?
Yes an email showing names, times, flights etc. Nothing showing what is included or isnt included. what also isnt shown on the confirmation is the 'level' of economy seat which. I've since learnt that there are 4 types of economy (Economy basic, Economy value, Economy comfort etc). Mine just says "economy".

You cannot make any assumption that what was included last year will be the same this year. That is pretty much where your claim ends unfortunately.

When you logged into the airline site to check your reservation there, what did it say? That would tell you what ticket class you had and what entitlement to baggage your ticket had.

Yet another example of why you should book directly with the airline and not through a 3rd party.

I'd absolutely echo booking direct - yes, use the websites like booking.com to scope out airlines and prices for the trip you want to make, but always book direct so you're not playing some sort of Chinese whispers with your booking.

But on the Expedia booking site when you book Etihad it is all there telling you every option and what is or is not included luggage wise.

    Great point @soolin !

The 4 tickets that Etihad sell in the economy cabin have 0, 25, 30 or 40 kg as hold baggage allowance.

Just another question really as I follow baggage threads with interest as things change every few weeks it seems. If you thought you had luggage included how did  you decide what your weight allowance was when you packed, bearing in mind that some airlines now start their basic paid for hold baggage at 15kg? I always take a checked bag but have to double check if I’m using an unfamiliar airline as to whether I have 15kg, 20kg or 23kg allowed, it’s no longer possible for me just to book a case and assume I can guess what weight I’m allowed.
Surely everyone takes three suitcases no matter what the airline 🫠

Sorry, but the fault lies entirely with the OP.  They clearly made assumptions with no evidence to support those assumptions.  As for the Economy 'class', if you haven't requested anything specific, it is going to be the lowest.

You expect checked baggage to be included unless told otherwise.

    I don't....
I've booked long haul flights on various scheduled airlines and always choose the option which suits me - always clearly explained.
I've booked package holidays with various companies and always check the hand/hold luggage allowance and hand luggage sizes - even if we've booked exactly the same holiday previously.
You incorrectly assumed that what applied previously would be the same this time.

    I don't expect anything and I don't assume anything.

A number of posters have pointed out when the pricing structure changed.
If you don't have a screenshot of what you say you saw months ago, you don't have a cat in hell's chance of getting your money back.

@BaggageBetrayal I've booked many flights over the past decade, not package holidays, and none have included anything more than hand luggage by default.  Package holidays will vary with most providing some checked luggage but the weight limit still varies.
