Hire car cross border charges

I recently hired a car from Belfast to drive to Donegal in the ROI for 8 days. According to the rental agreement the border crossing charge is £48 plus an unspecified foreign use charge. I rang the rental office in Belfast to get a total charge. I was told £72 (£9 per day). I rang the head office number to check this charge and was told it would cost £45 plus £42 per day - a total of £381!
When I looked at another car rental company they were only charging £25.53.
Anyone got any advice about this.

As an aside, how would they have known you had crossed the border had you not told them you were going to do so?0

Advice is to do your research and then make the decision. If one company is providing conflicting information, I would go elsewhere.0

Would you not invalidate the insurance if you cross borders having paid for a domestic hire? I could imagine problems if you hire a car in England and then take it over to the continent without telling the hire company of your intentions.0
