Holiday Cancellation Due to Illness

Hi,
I booked a short break through On The Beach to go to Majorca, paid in full on credit card but had to cancel at last minute due to my being taken ill. Understood that we would lose the cost of the holiday, but when we claimed back on the insurance, they said that we could claim back the ATOL fee plus the APT from On the Beach, as we had not flown.
Is this correct?

APT maybe, but after any admin fee you may find this is near zero. Not sure about the ATOL fee.1

The ATOL Protection Contribution would have protected you from the moment you booked your holiday through to your time away on holiday and that gets paid to the Civil Aviation Authority by On the Beach. This funds the Air Travel Trust Fund which would have protected you if On the Beach had gone out of business (refund or repatriation of stranded travellers). My company’s PTS/ATOL numbers are 6266/12759. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. ATOL numbers can be checked with the Civil Aviation Authority. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.1

APD - yes, ATOL fee - no.
You are actually not talking about much for the APD on a typical beach fly n' flop trip. As others have pointed out it may be minus an admin fee anyway.
I would just ask the travel insurer to pay out what they believe the insurance covers.1
