    Perhaps the way to do this is for you to accompany your dad when he visits them, explain that you wish to reoccupy the property and hand them the section 21 notice which you are legally obliged to do   Reassure them that you will work with them with regard to them exiting the property, good reference etc and offer them early exit preferential terms.  That should soften the blow.  Good luck.
