Hi,
I’m not sure this is really thread worthy but I’m lurking this evening and feel the need to share my thoughts.
so I’ve tried MFW thread and did overpay my mortgage in fact we do every month as standard now but still have over £200k remaining I’m resigned to it I think for being in our early 40s we earn well but do live in the the South East of England I’m ok with it.
I’m having an epiphany bear with me 😆
I’m earning more than ever and DH also earns well we take home over £6k a month which blows my mind as is a substantial amount but where the heck does it go?????
Ok so here is where my head goes:
I earn good money better than good I’d say excellent when I consider the world
I try not to keep up with the Jones’ at all but I think that has become a shift in me and I’m thinking social media is a large influence even when I’m not buying suggested products I’m seeing so much home content (because I find it relaxing) that I expect my home to be constantly evolving and looking beautiful which I know isn’t a reality for most.
I work hard for my money, I work doing something for others and am typically exhausted by long hours but good time off that I like to use with money so day trips with lunch
When I was on maternity leave I spent almost no money as I knew I wasn’t making any but now I work hard I end up spending it and I think because I feel entitled to although that isn’t a conscious thought process.
I’m almost certainly an undiagnosed ADHDer and I know that sounds like an excuse it fits me so well I could cry with relief it also fits my money habits of all or nothing which matches food and other things too.
so my question is twofold;
What are the current influences that encourage spending which are imperceptible but lurking (dream of a life off grid etc but am sure that’s me wanting to be all in a no spend life)
and
How do people manage modern life without loosing track of money is it all about being conscious of decisions etc or is there something more that I’m missing?
of course I don’t expect anyone to read this but am thinking I might ponder my own 2 questions here and see if it helps ❤️

So as I’m annoyingly up at 1:30am I may as give my own questions a go:
Influences - advertising (always struggled with the concept maybe an area for learning) everywhere magazines, insta, facebook (triggered the post was all in for saving and not spending as worried spent all money and then Facebook ad led me to magpie mode didn’t buy but it seemed so easy)
- ease of Apple pay
- lack of hands on money/out of touch with virtual money
- family
- friends
- learnt spending habits and patterns
Modern life navigation tips
- old style money saving (deffo approach I feel aligned to)
- tracking spending
- planning saving
- anxiety about economic stabilityMortgage = £270,000
Grateful ❤️0
